Mavis Gail Crooms was raised in a disciplined and hardworking household. Her mother was a schoolteacher in New Orleans, Louisiana, who also owned and operated her own beauty parlor. In addition to teaching and entrepreneurship, she was a skilled seamstress who made clothing and hats. Her father served in the military, instilling structure, resilience, and strength within the family.
